Cuban Currency
- The currencies currently accepted in Cuba are, the Cuban Convertible Peso and the Cuban Peso.
- US Dollars are no longer accepted, if you bring USD dollars, an extra tax of 10% will be applied (this tax will not be applied to other currencies).
- Canadian dollars can be exchanged without the tax that is applied to US dollar. The remaining Convertible Pesos can be exchange back into CAD at the end of your travel.
- Exchanges can be performed at CADECA banks, front desks of some hotels, etc. We strongly recommend not doing it on the street.
- Passports will be required at Cadeca or banks to get cash from credit cards.
- Credit cards accepted are: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, as long as they have not being issued by an American bank.
- ATM machines can also be used, but they are not very common.
- Travel cheques are accepted only in a few places.
- The rate of exchange of a Convertible Peso (CUC) for a Cuban Peso is 1CUC=24Cuban pesos*. Most likely you won't need Cuban pesos, only CUC. If you still would like to experience the usage of Cuban pesos it will only work to access a very limited number of products/services: public transportation (guaguas o camellos), market food (vegetables and fruits) etc.
